According to a study from the University of Alabama, “significant reductions in blood pressure” were achieved when people watched footage of a fire and listened to sounds of cracking wood. This statement comes as a result of a lengthy study as part of a PhD thesis, where over 200 people were sat in front of a fire projection, with the sound of crackling logs. The results that were ran over 3 separate trials concluded that participants had reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure immediately after taking part in the experiment.

The results are of no real surprise to us, as we are all too aware of how relaxing it is to be sat in front of a wood burning stove.

These results however, are encouraging to read and adds more substance to what we already know. When looking deeper in to the reasons why a cracking fire can have such a positively profound effect on a persons blood pressure, and emotional well being is quite simple…The calming effect dates back to prehistoric times, when a flickering fire light and crackling sounds of wood burning provided a relaxing effect that enhanced prosocial behaviour. In psychology terms, prosocial behaviour is any action intended to help others.

Back in the days many thousands of years before electricity, a fire of course helped prolong daylight, which meant hunting in the dark was both much easier and a great deal safer, another reason why a fire can today, be seen as so relaxing, welcomed and desirable. Add a loved one, a fine glass of wine on a cold winters evening and it’s even better!

All Charlton & Jenrick stoves are designed to ensure the very highest level of warmth and comfort are achieved, not to mention our continual development in making them not only ultra efficient but also highly visually appealing – both the flame picture and stove design. Our Purevision stoves incorporate a new air-profiling system to increase the completeness and efficiency of combustion throughout the burn cycle, and to enhance the high definition flame that characterises these models. A high definition flame is one of the key elements that make up the visual beauty of our wood burning stoves, and certainly will help in lowering the blood pressure of it’s owner! All our Fireline stoves have an airwash system, which helps towards efficiency and ensuring a picture perfect view of the fire.
